HistoricalUse of Arabic numbers on a stone for someone who was probably a convert.

According to his birth records, his middle name is spelled “Sedgwick”.

He is listed in 1891 England & Wales Census. He was 3 years old and was living as a border with his older sister (Marian, 6) and brother (Edward L. (Ladbrook), 5) at 113 Ladbroke Grove, Kensington, London, England. His siblings were born in Ceylon. His parents were not mentioned. They may have been living in Ceylon at the time as his father was the chief superintendent of the post office telegraphs in Colombo.

His brother, Edward Ladbrook Hurley, is buried in the Hong Kong Cemetery. He died on April 18, 1937, at age 51.

He was a master mariner. On June 22, 1920, the SCMP reported that he and Miss M.P. Goldenberg were to be married. He was the chief officer of the “Yatshing” at the time.

The SS Yatshing cargo ship was scuttled in Hong Kong sometime in 1942. It was raised, repaired and put into Japanese service as Nissho Maru until 1945.
