Historical In an article published in The Salt Lake Tribune on September 12, 1936, “Dario Beraha, son of a Shanghai exporter, was fined $500 by Federal Judge Michael J. Roche here Friday for attempting to smuggle jewels into the United States from the liner President Coolidge. Beraha was arrested last July when customs agents found jewels they said were valued at about $1250 in China, in a false compartment in a trunk.”
In a related article published in the Oakland Tribune on September 11, 1936, “If Dario Beraha, 35, son of a wealthy Shanghai merchant, wants to give an engagement ring to his fiancee in Paris he'll have to buy it back from the United States Customs Service. It was seized as part of $1250 worth of jewellery which agents found in a secret pocket in his trunk aboard the liner President Coolidge. He failed to declare it. In addition Federal Judge Michael Roche decreed, Beraha must pay a $500 fine or six months in jail for violation of the customs law.”
In Shanghai, they lived at 320 Kiangse Road, which was next door to a primary school. Today, the street is known as Jiangxi Middle Road.
